Join us for an evening of discovery and conversation about what's happening at the edge of k-12 education design in San Francisco, on the Web and beyond. Meet the pioneers creating the innovative models, and new ways of thinking about the role of schools and our relationship to them as parents, students and community members.

While the national conversation focuses on the failing state of our school systems, and regimens to improve student performance relative to common core standards, there are more disruptive efforts underway to fundamentally re-imagine what a school or a learning experience really is. While the ideas behind many of these schools often echo progressive traditions, they have a new context, new tools, and an increased urgency in the networked, chaotic world children are headed into. What practices are alternative schools testing and trying? What is driving families who decide to forgo traditional classrooms and create their own curricula and pedagogies? And how are learners' gains being measured?

The Edgeucation Salon is geared towards parents/students looking to understand their options in a rapidly changing environment. We also invite entrepreneurs, educators and futurists wishing to engage in conversation about these ideas. This event is designed to challenge your assumptions about how value is created in education, and provide clarity on the emerging choices available.

The program will consist of two 50 minute panel discussions, and time for conversation. Speakers tentatively include TED fellow Gever Tulley (SF Brightworks, the Tinkering School), Marina Gorbis (Institute for the Future), Gigi Carunungan (Synapse School), Daniela Digiacomo (Flex Academy), Ellen Hathaway (San Francisco Rock Project), Rebecca Dake (SF Schoolhouse), Marshall Roslyn (Schooltube), Wayee Chu (NewSchools Venture Fund), Children's Day School, and Alta Vista School.

• The New Schoolhouse: New forms of learning spaces are emerging that revolve around collaboration, hands-on learning and experimentation. Some of them look nothing like the classrooms of the past. Speakers will explain how and why they work.
• Learning Anytime, Anywhere: The availability of compelling online educational tools, and increasing number of non-school-based experiences are forcing parents and schools to reconsider when and where education happens. This panel will explore how to make best use of this new dimension.
